well, its almost here. my superbowl. but as in years past, i’m not as excited as i would normally be- why, you ask? because as with the past several years, i haven’t seen one of the best picture nominated movies. now i’m not sayin’ that they’re not worthy- there’s been buzz about them since before most of them released.
i’ve gone back and done some research (imagine that) to see what nominated movies that i saw before this big award. i started back 20 years to see what i deemed were ‘good years’- meaning i had a couple of dollars in my pocket and a yearning to get to a theatre to see a film. not to mention i didn’t have the rugrats then to haul about.
- i saw 3 of these prior to the big ceremony- being the big 80’s and all, cruise was all the rage.
- a banner year for film, saw 4 of these and still watch drivin miss daisy every chance i get
- apparently flush with cash (probably student loan money), i saw all 5. movies were cheap in ruston.
- saw 4 of these, skipped the kiddie flick
- ‘you can handle the truth’ and ‘hooooah’ entered my vocabulary- caught only 2 this year
- i saw the ‘girl in the red coat’ for months after this one haunted my dreams; saw 4 of them
- grand slam- saw all 5.
- saw only 2, funds were slim.
- again, saw only 1. SHOW ME THE MONEY, JERRY!
- saw all 5 and the winner 3 times at the Cinema 150 (RIP good theatre)
- saw only the winner and rediscovered my passion for shakespeare (and a new one for a fiennes boy)
- saw 2 b/c i was a fraidycat of ’seeing dead people’
- saw 3, one of which b/c mr depp was involved.
- saw only 1. maybe because i was pregnant and little man cole arrived on the scene. going forward, you will notice a steep decline in the number i see at the theatre before the award season
- saw only the winner- saw it 3 times. i dreamed i was roxie hart. i danced ‘fosse-style’ around the house. i still do.
- nuthin here. didn’t see a one. and still haven’t seen 4 of them.
- another ‘birth’ year in our family. saw the depp film.
- nada, zip, zilch
- ditto. i saw departed/sunshine/queen after the fact earlier this year.
- present day (well sunday) and i’ve yet to crack the dvd on any of them.
whew! now all that being said, i probably would have liked to have seen at least michael clayton and juno before the awards on sunday. juno b/c of the buzz and well, the other for clooney. but since i’ve been a slacker for the past several years, i figure i’ll just suffer through on sunday like i have for the last couple. eat my popcorn. drink my vanilla diet coke. “ooooh”, “ahhh”, and “WTF” over the dresses. scratch my head over the clips and their virtual meaningless to me as a show-watcher. sigh at 9:30 because there’s still so much to go and i’m bored. doze off as they announce the best picture winner.
yep, its my superbowl. every last second of it.

you actually remember which ones you saw before the oscars? wait until you turn 40. oh, wait — you did!
