(i realize this post is old, but they’re populating whilst i’m on the sand and not sure if i have interweb service)
over a week ago, on may 29, it was field day at indian hills and being a bit of a slouch this year with my parental involvement, i knew i couldn’t miss it.
the lead up to these events is usually nail-biting anticipation, but my eldest- who is a bit of a cynic (don’t know where he gets it from) was skeptical of my commitment to attend. monday brought this response:
cole: so, you’re really coming? (eye roll)
me: absolutely. i can’t wait.
cole: soooo, are you really coming or are you just saying that you are?
me: i promise i’m really coming.
flash forward to last thursday evening, when my astute son says:
cole: so, mom, are you still coming tomorrow?
me: yes, i arranged it with work and everything.
cole: so what happens if there’s an “emergency” at work (and he used the air quotes)
me: well, it will just have to happen without me.
the kid woke up at 6 he was so excited. so i rolled him out at daycare, ran to the gym for a quick bike ride, then headed up to the school with water and camera in hand. made it in time for the first day’s race- and stayed until we danced ourselves silly at the talent show. here’s what all cole learned about his mom during this venture that he didn’t previously have a clue about:
- mom can, in fact, dribble a basketball. while blocking out.
- she can also run, faster than he’s ever seen her move.
- mom knows all the dance moves to the following dances: bus stop; space jam; macarena; cupid’s shuffle, cha-cha slide.
we had a fantastic day- the best part was getting these four together for a picture- they were buddies in kindergarten and that friendship held strong through 1st grade. watch out 2nd grade teachers, the gang of four is ready:

chris, dawson, cole, will- ready to take over the world!
our day was wrapped up with a ball game that night- we didn’t win but we played awful hard.

stealin third... run cole run!

mighty cole at the bat
